The Progress of Love: Love Letters (1771-1772). Jean-Honoré Fragonard (French, 1732-1806). Oil on canvas. The Frick Collection.
Fragonard completed a series of paintings known as “The Progress of Love,” commissioned by the last mistress of Louis XV, Comtesse du Barry, who ordered four canvases depicting ‘the four ages of love.’” These paintings show scenes reminiscent of that of a classical love story which would end with this work, a calm scene of the lovers reading love letters.
